Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport is about 5 km away, roughly 15 minutes by car. Metered taxis are available at the airport, Grab and Bolt work well around town, and the hotel can arrange a shuttle or a rental car for a fee. Chiang Rai has no train station, so from Chiang Mai or Bangkok the alternative to flying is the bus; the bus station is about 10 minutes away by car. In town, tuk-tuks are easy to find (agree the fare before setting off), and songthaews, the shared pick-ups, leave from the old bus station near the Night Bazaar.
Wat Jed Yod, the temple of seven spires, has a large gilded Buddha and is lit up after dark. At the Clock Tower a free light and music show usually runs at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00, and from there it's a short walk to the Night Bazaar for textiles, silver, wooden crafts and Lanna dance performances. On Saturdays from late afternoon, Thanalai Road becomes the Walking Street, about a kilometre of craft and food stalls. Wat Phra Kaew, where the Emerald Buddha was discovered in 1434, is about 1.6 km away. Further out, the Blue Temple lies 5 km north of the city, and the White Temple and the Black House each around 13 km away, in opposite directions: visit the White Temple at opening time or after 15:00 and cover shoulders and knees. November to February is the most pleasant season; March to May is hot, and June to October brings rain and green landscapes.
